Precautions for Selecting Cosmetic Packaging Materials

The effect of cosmetics depends not only on its internal formula, but also on its packaging materials. The right packaging can ensure product stability and user experience. Here are a few key factors to consider when choosing cosmetic packaging.

First, we need to consider the pH value and chemical stability of the product. For example, depilatory creams and hair dyes usually have a high pH value. For such products, composite materials that combine the corrosion resistance of plastics with the impermeability of aluminum are ideal packaging options. Usually, the packaging structure of such products will use multi-layer composite materials such as polyethylene/aluminum foil/polyethylene or polyethylene/paper/polyethylene.

Next is the consideration of color stability. Some products that are easy to fade, such as cosmetics with pigments, may float in glass bottles. Therefore, for these products, choosing opaque packaging materials, such as opaque plastic bottles or coated glass bottles, can effectively prevent fading problems caused by ultraviolet rays.

Cosmetics with oil-water mixtures, such as oil-in-water creams, are more compatible with plastics and are suitable for packaging in plastic containers. For air products such as insecticides, aerosol packaging is a good choice because of its good use effect.

Hygiene is also an important consideration in packaging selection. For example, hospital packaging products are more suitable for pump packaging to keep the product hygienic.

In terms of materials, PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is suitable for packaging daily chemicals due to its good chemical properties and transparency. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) needs to pay attention to the degradation problem during heating, and usually needs to add stabilizers to improve its properties. Iron containers are widely used in the packaging of aerosol products, while aluminum containers are used to make aerosol containers, lipsticks and other cosmetics packaging due to their easy processing and corrosion resistance.

As one of the oldest packaging materials, glass has the advantages of chemical inertness, corrosion resistance, and non-leakage, and is especially suitable for packaging products that do not contain alkaline ingredients. But its disadvantage is that it is brittle and fragile.

Plastic packaging is widely used due to its flexible design, corrosion resistance, low cost, and non-breakability, but it is necessary to be vigilant that the permeability of propellants and active substances to certain plastics may affect product quality.

Finally, we have to consider the packaging of aerosol products. Such products usually use pressure-resistant container materials such as metal, glass or plastic. Among them, tinplate three-piece aerosol cans are the most widely used. In order to improve the atomization effect, a device with a gas phase side hole can also be used.

The selection of cosmetic packaging is a complex decision-making process, which requires manufacturers to ensure product quality while also considering environmental protection, cost, and ease of use. Through scientific analysis and careful design, cosmetic packaging can play a key role in protecting products and enhancing consumer experience.
